The Ming Dynasty Navigator , Admoral Zheng He, is believed to have landed on the South-eastern cape of the island where it is now called Batu Maung. The San-Bao Temple in Batu Maung is built at the location where Admiral Zheng He had set his feet on.

The island was later taken over by Sir Francis Light in 1786. It was developed into a harbor and a naval base. Presence of ample opportunity for trading and commercial activities had attracted immigrants from India, China and surrounding regions islands has spurred the growth of the island into a highly urbanized town.
