The original name of Penang is "Pulau Pinang". "Pulau" means "Island"
and "Pinang" means "betel nuts". Literally, it means "Island of
Betel Nuts". In fact, it is said the island was referred to as
"Bin-Lang Yu" in the navigational drawings used by the famous Ming
Dynasty navigator Admiral Zheng He (1371-1433). Exactly, "Bin-Lang
Yu" means the "Island of Betel Nuts".
Why is betel nut called "Pinang"?
In the Chinese Language, the nut is also called "Pinang". The famous
Chinese medical scientist Li-Shi-Zhen (1518-1593) of Ming
Dynasty pointed out in his book titled Ben-Cao-Gang-Mu that the
nuts were served to honoured guest upon his arrival as a gesture
of appreciation for his visit. As such, the nut was named as Bing-Lang because
both Chinese character Bing and Lang mean honoured
and valued guest. The book Ben-Cao-Gang-Mu is a very prominent
writing of traditional Chinese medical science. It is estimated that
it contains detailed notes on 1892 types of plants and substances
used as traditional Chinese medicine.
Based on this, it is recommended that the name Penang or Pulau
Pinang should be interpreted as the Island of Honoured and Valued
Guest.

Brief History of Penang
In fact, the Penang island could have been a good stopover for
merchant ships centuries ago. In the 15 centuries, the merchant
ships
that sailed between India and Chine to trade in silk, tea, spices
and porcelain could have make used of Penang Island as a stopover
to shelter themselves from monsoon and to replenish their fresh
water supply. The Ming Dynasty Navigator , Admoral Zheng He, is
believed
to have landed on the South-eastern cape of the island where it is
now called Batu Maung. The San-Bao Temple in Batu Maung is built at
the location where Admiral Zheng He had set his feet on.
The island was later taken over by Sir Francis Light in 1786. It was
developed into a harbor and a naval base. Presence of ample
opportunity for trading and commercial activities had attracted
immigrants from India, China and surrounding regions islands has
spurred the growth of the island into a highly urbanized town.
Despite its extensive urbanization, Penang is unique in the sense
that you can experience a shift from the vibrant life of the
industrial and commercial zones to the rustic peace of farming
villages
and the breezy beach within 30 minutes of travel. Shopping sprees,
jungle tracking, historic sites, cultural shows, and a lot more are
all you can have on this small island itself.

together with Melaka, was acknowledged as Malaysia's newest
